calima

These people built their houses on a wide plain between the slopes of the Western Colombian Andes and the Pacific Ocean, a region drained by the river San Juan in the north and the Dagua in the south. This plain, which is traversed by the river Calima and covered by tropical rain forest and mangroves, was the land of these important Calima artisans.

The splendour of their goldwork is shown in large objects of high grade gold. Decorative motives include big masks with hanging nose and ear pieces, borders in geometric relief and stylized animals.

The gold pieces include diadems, tubular bracelets, hoops, spools, bowls, shells, ceremonial earrings and anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures, including the famous Sun God. Also well known are the famous necklaces of beads, called "moritas" of identical beads like little drops of gold.
