tierradentro

In the river Paez drainage, a region of high mountains and steep slopes, to the east of the department of Cauca, is situated the site of Tierradentro, where a unique culture, known for its statues, temples passages and underground tombs flourished.

The tombs are the most outstanding characteristic of this civilization. Of oval plan, with side niches and central columns, decorated with human figures which seem to be holding up to roof, the entrances and aisles are indicated by low arches which open out from the walls. The subterranean sanctuaries are painted with straight lines or geometrical forms in black, dark red and yellow, still vivid after so many centuries.

The statues are enormous, and similar to those of San Agustin. They have helmets, tiaras, breastplates, ankle bracelets, diadems, bracelets and necklaces. The few golden objects found in this zone are common with other regions of the country and consist of circular breastplates, wire noserings, earpieces of false filigree and one most beautiful ceremonial mask, found at Inza and now exhibited at the Gold Museum in Bogotá.
