tumaco

The archaeological zone of Tumaco is situated on the Pacific coast, below the Andes in the south of Colombia towards the frontier with Ecuador. Covered with mangroves, the region is humid with heavy rains.

There are extraordinary human flqures in ceramic; in many of the heads found up to now, the profile, nose and even hair style are very similar to the art of Egypt. Of an amazing realism, the most elaborate are the larger figures, some of which conserve part of the body. They wear signs of their rank, and a profusion of ornaments which could be of gold or silver. Researchers have found similarities between this site and the cultures of Esmeraldas and Mananbi in Ecuador. Although in the area of La Tolita, in the province of Esmeraldas, Ecuador objects of gold and silver have been found, on the Colombian side these finds are scarce.
